"பீன்ஸ் விவசாயம் கொஞ்சம் போட்டு நிறைய சம்பாதிக்கும் வழி — குறைந்த முதலீடு, வேகமான வருமானம். Beans farming is the art of earning big by investing small."

— Kavin, Thalavadi, Erode 🌿

பீன்ஸ் — The Crop That Pays Every Week

Beans gave me something other crops didn't — weekly income, low investment, and fast returns within 45 days.

When I first planted beans on 1 acre of my Thalavadi farm, I didn't expect it to become one of my favourite crops. It grows fast, produces continuously for 3–4 months, and market demand stays steady — especially with local vegetable markets and hotel supply chains. This is my real farming diary, written harvest by harvest. 🫘

My Beans Farm Diary — Week by Week

01Week 1
Soil Preparation

🌍 Land Ready — நிலம் தயார்

Deep ploughing, 2 rounds for my red loamy soil. Added 3 tonnes of farmyard manure and formed raised beds. The soil smelled rich and alive — the quiet excitement of a new beginning.

02Week 1
Planting Day

🌱 Seeds in the Ground — விதை நடவு

Sowed French beans directly at 30×20cm spacing, 4kg seeds/acre. Within 5 days, tiny green shoots broke through — one of farming's most satisfying sights.

03Week 2–3
Vegetative Stage

🌿 Plants Growing Fast — வேக வளர்ச்சி

Visibly taller every morning. First fertiliser dose applied, bamboo supports installed. The farm turned lush green within 3 weeks.

04Week 4–5
Flowering Stage

🌸 Flowers Everywhere — பூக்கள் வந்தன

White and pink flowers covered every plant by day 28. Boron spray applied for fruit set — the most critical stage for final yield.

05Day 48
Harvest — The Reward Day

🎉 First Harvest — முதல் அறுவடை!

Picked 120kg on day one, sold at ₹28/kg — ₹3,360 income on day one. Picking pods at sunrise is why I chose farming over a desk job.

06Month 2–4
Continuous Harvest

💰 Weekly Income Began — வாரந்தோறும் வருமானம்

Harvested every 4–5 days for 3 months, 80–150kg each time. Weekly income averaged ₹2,500–4,000 — real cash flow, unlike crops that pay once.

Complete Beans Cultivation — A to Z

  1. 🌍Sandy loam · pH 6.0–7.0

    Soil & Land Prep

Plough 15–20cm deep, add 3–4T FYM/acre, form raised beds 1m wide. Beans hate waterlogging — roots need oxygen.

  2. 🌱French · Cluster · Country

    Choosing Varieties

French beans fetch the highest price, cluster beans give the highest yield. Check local mandi demand before deciding.

  3. 🌾30×20cm spacing · 4–5kg seed/acre

    Sowing

Direct sow, no nursery. Best in June–July or Oct–Nov. Treat seeds with Rhizobium — cuts fertiliser need by 25%.

  4. 💧Moderate water · drip recommended

    Watering

Every 3–4 days; never let soil dry during flowering and pod development. Drip saves 35% water and cuts leaf disease.

  5. 🌿Light feeder · organic preferred

    Fertiliser

20kg SSP + 3T FYM basal, 10kg Urea day 20, 10kg MOP at flowering. Beans fix their own nitrogen — don't overdo urea.

Real Challenges — & What I Learned

🐛

Pod Borer Attack

Reduced marketable yield 15%. Fixed with Spinosad spray every 10 days and pheromone traps every 25m.

🍂

Powdery Mildew

Appeared week 4 after rain. Wettable Sulphur spray + better air circulation cleared it in 10 days.

📉

Market Glut

Mandi price crashed ₹28 → ₹10/kg at peak. Direct hotel and canteen buyers held my price at ₹20/kg.

🌡️

Flower Drop in Heat

20% flower drop in week 5. Potassium Nitrate spray, extra watering, and shade net recovered it in 8 days.

🌧️

Waterlogging After Rain

30 plants got root rot from poor drainage. Now I always build drainage bunds before planting — prevention costs ₹500, fixing costs ₹5,000.

👨‍🌾

Labour at Harvest

Built a network of 8 regular workers, informed 2 days ahead, and finished picking by 11am before heat sets in.

Total investment: ₹35,000. Total yield over 3 months: 4,000–6,000 kg, at a blended average of ₹18/kg. Net profit after costs: ₹37,000–73,000 per acre per 3 months. With 2–3 crops a year on the same land, annual beans income from 1 acre can reach ₹74,000–2,19,000 — and it arrives weekly, not once a season. 🫘

Kavin's Beans Farming Tips

🦠

Rhizobium Seed Treatment

Treat seeds before sowing — cuts urea cost 25% and lifts yield 15%.

🌿

Don't Over-Fertilise

Beans fix their own nitrogen. Too much urea means leaves, not pods.

✂️

Pick Pods at the Right Time

Harvest while firm, before seeds bulge. Regular picking encourages more pods.

🏨

Build Hotel Relationships

Direct buyers pay ₹5–8/kg more than mandi and buy consistently.

📅

Time Your Sowing

Oct–Nov sowing hits Dec–Jan prices, 30–40% higher than peak-supply months.

🌧️

Drainage Is Everything

Roots die within 48 hours of waterlogging. Raised beds prevent 90% of root disease.

பீன்ஸ் விவசாயம் எனக்கு கற்றுக்கொடுத்தது — சின்ன முதலீட்டில் தொடர்ந்த வருமானம் எப்படி பெறுவது என்று. Beans taught me that a small, steady crop can outperform a big, risky one. If you want farming income that feels like a weekly paycheck instead of a once-a-season gamble, this is the crop to start with. 🫘
