கத்தரிக்காய் என்றால் சாதாரண காய் என்று நினைக்கிறீர்களா? தவறு! Brinjal is one of the most consumed vegetables across India — in sambar, curry, fry, and chutney. The demand never stops. And for a Tamil Nadu farmer, it is one of the most reliable income-generating crops available.
I am Kavin from Thalavadi, Erode — growing vegetables on my farm for the past 2 years. Among all the vegetables I have tried, hybrid brinjal stands out for one simple reason: it produces fruit continuously for 4–6 months, giving you regular weekly income unlike most other crops.
I chose hybrid variety specifically because of its disease resistance, higher yield, and uniform fruit size that commands better market price. This blog tells my complete story — from soil preparation to the final sale — with real numbers and honest lessons. 🍆
3 Reasons I Chose Hybrid Brinjal
Hybrid brinjal gives 10–14 tonnes per acre compared to just 4–6 tonnes from traditional varieties. Same land, same effort — but dramatically more harvest and income. The numbers speak for themselves.
Hybrid varieties are bred specifically to resist the most common brinjal diseases — bacterial wilt, fruit borer, leaf curl virus. Fewer losses, lower pesticide costs, and healthier plants throughout the season.
Uniform size, glossy skin, and deep purple colour of hybrid brinjals fetch 20–30% better price in market. Buyers and hotel suppliers prefer hybrid brinjals for their consistent quality every single time.
Month by Month — My Real Story
Here is how my brinjal farming journey unfolded — every month, every lesson:
Deep ploughed twice. Added 4T FYM. Formed raised beds. Soil pH tested — perfect at 6.5.
Got certified hybrid seedlings. Planted 2,500 plants at 75×60cm spacing. Evening transplanting.
Plants established well. First fertiliser dose applied. Stakes installed. Early pest scouting began.
First flowers appeared at day 45. Beautiful purple flowers! Boron spray applied to improve fruit set.
Day 62 — first purple brinjals ready. Harvested 180kg on day one. Market price ₹22/kg. Pure joy!
Harvested every 3–4 days for 5 months. Weekly income. Total yield crossed 12 tonnes. Life-changing!
Brinjal Cultivation — A to Z Steps
Based on my real experience — here is the complete step-by-step growing guide:
Plough 20–25cm deep. Add 4–5 tonnes FYM or 2T vermicompost per acre. Apply 25kg SSP as basal. Form raised beds 1m wide — brinjal needs excellent drainage. Waterlogged roots cause bacterial wilt which kills plants within days. Red loamy soil like in Erode region is ideal for brinjal.
Top hybrid varieties: Arka Nidhi, Arka Anand, TNAU Hybrid-1, Manjari Gota. Buy 25–30 day old seedlings from certified nursery. Treat seedlings with Trichoderma solution before transplanting. Healthy seedlings have strong stem, 4–5 true leaves, no yellowing or pest damage.
Transplant in evening to avoid heat stress. Make holes in drip-irrigated beds. Place seedlings at 75×60cm spacing — adequate for the bushy growth of hybrid varieties. Install bamboo stakes at transplanting itself. Water immediately. Apply mulch film to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
Water daily for first 10 days. Then every 2–3 days based on weather. Brinjal is moderately drought tolerant but needs consistent moisture for continuous fruiting. Critical rule: Never let soil completely dry during flowering and fruiting — it causes flower drop and small fruits. Reduce watering during rainy season.
Basal: 25kg SSP + 4T FYM. Day 20: 15kg Urea. Day 40: 15kg Urea + 20kg MOP. Day 60 (flowering): 10kg Urea + 20kg MOP + foliar spray of Boron + Calcium. Every 30 days thereafter: 10kg Urea + 15kg MOP to maintain continuous production. Foliar spray 19:19:19 NPK every 15 days.
Watering Schedule — Stage by Stage
| Growth Stage | வளர்ச்சி நிலை | Frequency | Amount/Plant | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🌱 After transplanting (1–10 days) | Daily | 1–1.5L | 🔴 Critical |
| 🌿 Establishment (10–30 days) | Every 2 days | 2–3L | 🟡 High |
| 🌸 Flowering (45–65 days) | Every 2 days | 3–4L | 🔴 Critical |
| 🍆 Fruiting (ongoing) | Every 2–3 days | 4–5L | 🔴 Critical |
| ☀️ Peak summer | Daily | +30% extra | 🔴 Critical |
| 🌧️ Monsoon season | Reduce/Stop | Rain sufficient | 🟢 Monitor |
Real Challenges — & How I Solved Them
Tap each challenge to see what happened and how I fixed it:
Fruit borer larvae enter young shoots and fruits — wilting shoots and damaged fruits are the signs. I used pheromone traps (2 per acre) and sprayed Spinosad 45 SC at 0.3ml/litre every 10 days during fruiting. Removing and destroying affected shoots immediately is critical. This one pest can destroy 40% of yield if ignored.
Some plants suddenly wilted and died within 2 days — bacterial wilt from waterlogged conditions after unseasonal rain. No cure once infected. I removed affected plants immediately to prevent spread. Applied Trichoderma to surrounding soil. Improved drainage channels in that area. Lost 6% of plants — a hard lesson in drainage management.
During week 8, market price dropped from ₹22/kg to ₹8/kg suddenly due to oversupply. I diversified — sold 40% directly to local hotels at ₹18/kg, stored 20% for 5 days until prices recovered to ₹14/kg. Direct selling relationships with 3 local hotels saved my margin significantly. Always have a backup buyer ready.
Peak summer temperatures in Erode caused flower drop on 20% of flowers. I immediately increased watering frequency to daily, sprayed Potassium Nitrate solution (1%) in evening, and installed shade nets on the western side of the farm. Fruit set recovered within 10 days. Summer management is crucial for continuous yield.
Leaf curl virus spread through whitefly infestation. Leaves curled, plants stunted. Fixed with yellow sticky traps every 15m, neem oil spray 3% every 5 days. Removed severely affected plants. Using reflective mulch film from the beginning would have prevented whitefly landing — applying this lesson in my next crop.
My 1 Acre Profit — Complete Breakdown
Investment Breakdown — 1 Acre Hybrid Brinjal
Total yield from 1 acre hybrid brinjal over 5–6 months: 10–14 tonnes. At blended average price of ₹12–18/kg, gross revenue: ₹1,20,000–2,52,000. After deducting ₹50,000 investment — net profit: ₹80,000–2,00,000 depending on market price management. Brinjal gives weekly income for 5–6 months — unlike one-time harvest crops. 🍆
"கத்தரிக்காய் வாரந்தோறும் வருமானம் தரும் — இது ஒரு விவசாயியின் மாத சம்பளம் போன்றது. Brinjal gives weekly income — it is the farmer's monthly salary, paid directly from the soil."

Harvest brinjals when firm and glossy — before seeds harden inside. Over-mature fruits are bitter and fetch lower price. Harvest every 3–4 days for continuous production.
Install FSB pheromone traps from day 30. Replace lures every 30 days. This one practice reduces fruit borer damage by 60–70% without chemical spray cost.
After 3 months, prune old unproductive branches to encourage new growth and fruiting. Pruning gives the plant a second wind — extending productive life by 2–3 more months.
Contact 5–10 local hotels and restaurants directly. They pay 20–30% more than mandi price for regular, quality supply. One good hotel relationship is worth 10 mandi trips.
Black plastic mulch film reduces weeding labour by 80%, retains moisture, prevents soil splash disease. Upfront cost of ₹3,000–4,000 saves ₹8,000–10,000 in labour and pesticides.
Write down daily harvest quantity and selling price in a notebook. This data helps you identify your best market timing and plan future crops around peak price seasons.
