Coconut is not just a crop — it's a lifetime investment that pays for 80+ years without replanting.

The Tree of Life

In Tamil Nadu, coconut farming has been part of our agricultural DNA for centuries — from Erode to Pollachi, Salem to Tirunelveli. Every part of the tree has value: the fruit, the water, the shell, the leaves, the trunk, the coir.

I'm Kavin from Thalavadi, Erode, and I've personally grown coconuts on my farm. In this complete guide I'm sharing everything I learned — from choosing the right variety to lifetime care. Real knowledge from real soil. Let's begin. 🌱

Coconut Varieties —

Choosing the right variety is the first and most important decision in coconut farming.

🌴

Tall Variety

Traditional, hardy, disease resistant. Fruits in 6–8 years, lives 80–100 years. Best for large farms.

✅ Best Long Term
🌱

Dwarf Variety

Fruits in 3–4 years, easy to harvest, sweeter tender water. Shorter lifespan of 40–50 years.

✅ Quick Returns

Hybrid (D×T)

Cross of Dwarf and Tall. Fruits in 4–5 years, 150–200 nuts/year. Most popular choice today.

🏆 Most Recommended
💧

Tender Coconut

Grown for coconut water — high demand, premium price ₹30–60/nut. Great for roadside farms.

💰 Best Market Price
🟤

Chowghat Orange Dwarf

Orange-coloured nuts, high sugar water content. Popular for tender coconut shops.

✅ Premium Variety
🌟

Developed by TNAU for Tamil Nadu's climate — high yield, drought tolerant.

🏆 TN Special

Soil Preparation —

Ideal soil: sandy loam or laterite with good drainage, pH 5.5–8.0, at least 1.2m deep. Avoid waterlogged or clay-heavy soil — coconut roots need to breathe.

Land prep: plough 2–3 times, remove weeds and old roots, mark pit spacing, then rest the land for 2 weeks before digging.

Pit digging: 1m × 1m × 1m pits, weathered in sunlight for 2 weeks, then filled with topsoil + farmyard manure + sand before planting.

Planting Method — Step by Step

  1. Best Planting Time

    June – December |

Monsoon season gives natural soil moisture. Irrigated farms can plant any time — just avoid peak summer heat stress (March–May).

  2. Spacing

Square spacing gives 70–75 trees/acre. Triangular 8m×8m gives slightly better yield via more sunlight. Never go below 6.5m×6.5m.

  3. Selecting Seedlings

Pick 9–12 month seedlings with 6–8 healthy leaves and an intact root ball. Buy from certified TNAU nurseries.

  4. Planting in the Pit

Half-fill with topsoil+compost, centre the seedling at ground level, firm the soil, water immediately, then mulch the base.

  5. After-Planting Care

Shade with palm fronds, water every 2–3 days, apply neem cake against termites, and check weekly for wilting or pests.

Irrigation Guide —

Water is life for coconut, but too much or too little both cause problems.

💡 Pro tip: drip irrigation saves 40–50% water over flood irrigation with better yield — government subsidies are often available, check your local agriculture office.

Fertiliser Schedule — Year by Year

  1. Year 1 — Establishment

    15kg FYM + 200g Urea + 200g Super Phosphate + 200g Potash per tree, split June/December. Focus on roots, don't over-fertilise.

  2. Years 2–4 — Growing

    25–35kg FYM + 500g Urea + 500g SSP + 1kg Potash/year in 3 splits. Add Zinc Sulphate and Boron once a year.

  3. Year 5+ — Bearing

    50kg FYM + 1.3kg Urea + 1.2kg SSP + 2kg MOP/year, split 3 ways. Potash is critical for nut quality — never skip it.

  4. Organic Alternative

    Vermicompost 25kg + neem cake 5kg + wood ash 2kg + bone meal 1kg/tree/year. Organic coconuts fetch 20–30% more.

Common Pests & Diseases

🐛

Rhinoceros Beetle

Drills into the crown. Fix: naphthalene balls in leaf axils, pheromone traps, remove dead wood.

⚠️ Most Common
🔴

Red Palm Weevil

Larvae eat the trunk from inside — most destructive. Fix: pheromone traps every 200m, coal tar on stem wounds.

🚨 Most Dangerous
🌙

Eriophyid Mite

White/yellow patches on young nuts. Fix: 0.4% Wettable Sulphur or 3% neem oil spray.

⚠️ Common
🍂

Root Wilt Disease

Yellowing, drooping leaves. No cure — use disease-free seedlings, improve drainage, apply Trichoderma.

🚨 Serious
🍄

Bud Rot

Crown turns brown and rots. Fix: remove affected tissue, apply 1% Bordeaux mixture, prevent waterlogging.

⚠️ Seasonal
🐜

Termites

Attacks young seedlings and roots. Fix: 1kg neem cake per tree at planting; chlorpyrifos in water if severe.

⚠️ Young Trees

Harvesting Guide —

📅 Frequency
Every 45–60 days. Mature nuts take 12 months from flower; tender coconut is harvested at 6–7 months.
✅ Signs of Maturity
Brown shell, hollow sound when tapped, slightly dried husk. Dry coconuts: wait 11–12 months after flowering.
🧗 Method
Traditional climbing or a mechanical harvesting pole. Never let coconuts fall — bruising cuts shelf life.
💧 Tender Harvest
இளநீர் harvested at 6–7 months — sweeter water, and a premium ₹30–60/piece vs ₹10–18 for dry nuts.
📦 Post-Harvest
Sort by size and quality, store cool and dry. Fresh nuts last 2–3 months; sell tender coconuts within 2 weeks.
💰 Sell Smart
Approach oil mills, tender coconut vendors, supermarkets and online buyers directly — 20–30% more than mandi price.

Investment vs Profit — Real Numbers

A realistic figure for 1 acre of hybrid coconut farming in Tamil Nadu:

₹0Seedlings (75 trees)
₹0Land Prep
₹0Drip Irrigation
₹0Annual Fertiliser
₹0Annual Labour
150–200Nuts / Tree / Yr
0Total Nuts / Acre / Yr
₹8–15LAnnual Profit (Mature)

Initial investment for 1 acre: roughly ₹1.5–2 Lakh. Returns start from year 5 (hybrid) or year 6–8 (tall). Once mature, a well-managed acre earns ₹8–15 Lakh a year for the next 60–70 years — a truly generational investment. 🌴

Lifetime Care — Year-Round Calendar

☀️

Jan – March

Full fertiliser dose before summer, increase watering, mulch 2kg/tree, harvest mature nuts, watch for pests.

🌡️

April – May

Critical water period — water every 5 days, add shade mulch, spray potassium silicate, avoid pruning.

🌧️

June – September

Reduce irrigation, clear drainage, apply second fertiliser dose — best time for new planting.

🍂

October – December

Peak harvest, third fertiliser dose, clean only fully-dried leaves, apply neem cake, plan for dry months ahead.

A coconut farmer who waters consistently, fertilises on time, and harvests regularly will never face poverty.
