🌾 Paddy Farming · நெல் விவசாயம்
விதை முதல் அறுவடை வரை — Seed to Harvest, the complete Tamil Nadu paddy playbook.
"நெல் விதைத்தவன் பசியில்லாமல் வாழ்வான். The farmer who plants paddy will never go hungry — and with smart water and fertiliser management, he will never be poor either."
— Tamil farming proverb, passed down through generationsநெல் — the heartbeat of Tamil farming
நெல் விவசாயம் என்பது தமிழர்களின் ஆன்மா — paddy is not just a crop in Tamil Nadu, it's identity, culture and livelihood in one golden grain. From the Cauvery banks to the red soil of Erode, it has fed our families for generations.
With the right seed, disciplined water management and a proper fertiliser schedule, paddy can give a Tamil Nadu farmer a reliable income 2–3 times a year. This guide covers everything from land prep to selling smart.
I farm in Thalavadi, Erode, and this is knowledge collected from real fields, real neighbouring farmers, and real Tamil Nadu soil. 🌾
🌱 Choosing the right variety
Your soil, water availability and market demand should decide the variety — not just yield numbers.
ADT 43 / ADT 45
Short duration, drought tolerant, ideal for water-scarce regions. Yield 28–32 bags/acre.
✅ Best for Erode regionPonni (CO 43)
Premium taste and aroma, strong market demand. 120–125 days, best for Cauvery delta.
💰 Premium market priceIR 20
Classic high-yield, resilient variety suited to most Tamil Nadu soils. 130 days.
✅ Most popularSamba Mosanam
Traditional, long duration (160–170 days), excellent grain quality, best market price.
💰 Highest priceCO (R) 51
Low water need, 105 days, good drought and blast resistance.
⚡ Water saverHybrid KRH‑2
Highest yield — 40–50 bags/acre, needs more inputs, best on fertile irrigated land.
🏆 Highest yield🚜 From land prep to transplanting
Primary ploughing — முதல் உழவு
15–20 days before transplantingDeep plough 20–25cm to break the hardpan and bury weeds. Let the field sun-bake a week to kill soil pests naturally.
Organic matter — உரம் கலத்தல்
10 days before transplantingApply 5–8 tonnes FYM or 2 tonnes vermicompost/acre, then plough in to build organic matter and feed soil life.
Flooding & puddling — தண்ணீர் நிரப்பல்
3–5 days before transplantingFlood 5–7cm and puddle thoroughly. This holds water, controls weeds, and makes transplanting easy. Level the field well.
Seed treatment & nursery — நாற்றுப் பண்ணை
Sown 25–30 days before transplantingSoak seeds 24hrs, treat with Trichoderma viride (4g/kg). Sow on raised beds; seedlings ready at 20–25cm, 4–5 leaves.
Transplanting — நடவு
20–25 day old seedlingsPlant 2–3 seedlings/hill at 20×15cm spacing, 2–3cm depth. Transplant early morning or evening — never midday heat.
💧 Water management — எவ்வளவு? எப்போது?
Water is paddy's lifeblood — but the depth and timing must be precise at every growth stage.
| Growth stage | Water depth | Days | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🌱 Transplanting | 2–3cm saturated | 1–5 | 🔴 Critical |
| 🌿 Tillering | 2–5cm standing | 6–30 | 🔴 Critical |
| ⚡ Tillering end | Drain 5–7 days | 30–37 | 🟡 Important |
| 🌾 Panicle initiation | 5–7cm standing | 38–65 | 🔴 Critical |
| 🌸 Flowering | 5cm — never dry | 66–80 | 🔴 Most critical |
| 🌾 Grain filling | Alternate wet/dry | 81–105 | 🟡 Important |
| ✅ Pre-harvest | Drain 10 days prior | 105–115 | 🟢 Normal |
💡 AWD method: Alternate Wetting & Drying cuts water use 25–30% with no yield loss — let the field dry till water is 15cm below the surface, then re-flood to 5cm. Your block agriculture office runs free training.
🌿 Fertiliser schedule — சரியான உரம், சரியான நேரம்
| Timing | Fertiliser | Qty / acre | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Land prep | FYM / Vermicompost | 5–8t / 2t | Soil enrichment |
| Transplanting day | DAP | 50kg | Root development |
| 15 DAT | Urea (1st split) | 35kg | Early leaf growth |
| 30 DAT | Urea + MOP | 35kg + 25kg | Tillering boost |
| Panicle initiation | Urea + Zinc Sulphate | 30kg + 10kg | Grain formation |
| Grain filling | MOP (Potash) | 25kg | Grain weight & quality |
🛡️ Common pests & diseases
Stem borer
Causes "dead heart" or "white ear". Release Trichogramma cards weekly; spray Carbofuran if severe.
Brown plant hopper
Causes hopper burn patches. Drain field, spray Buprofezin, avoid excess nitrogen.
Blast disease
Diamond grey lesions. Spray Tricyclazole at panicle stage; plant resistant varieties like ADT 43.
Sheath blight
Lesions near waterline. Spray Propiconazole, reduce water depth, avoid dense planting.
Rats
Can destroy 10–30% of crop near harvest. Use bait stations; run community control drives.
Weeds
Apply Pretilachlor 3 days after transplanting, one manual weeding at 30 days.
💰 Investment vs profit — 1 acre
Total investment ≈ ₹30,000–35,000/acre. Gross income at ₹2,200–2,500/bag MSP: ₹66,000–100,000. Net profit: ₹35,000–65,000 per acre per crop — and with 2 crops a year on irrigated land, annual profit can reach ₹70,000–1,30,000/acre. 🌾
Every season teaches something new — a slightly earlier transplant, a leveller pass I skipped, a hopper outbreak I caught late. Paddy rewards patience and precision more than luck. If you're starting this season, get your water timing and nursery right first — everything else follows from that. 🌾
