"வெங்காயம் விவசாயம் சரியாக செய்தால் — இது தங்க வணிகம். Done right, onion farming is a golden business — the key is timing your planting and your selling."

— Kavin, Thalavadi, Erode 🌾

வெங்காயம் — Every Kitchen's Essential

வெங்காயம் இல்லாமல் ஒரு Tamil kitchen இல்லை. Onion goes into every curry, every dal, every street food — that year-round demand is what makes it such a reliable cash crop when it's managed right.

Tamil Nadu grows onion well in Erode, Salem, Dindigul, and Villupuram, and the semi-arid climate suits it enough to get two crops a year off the same land. Managed properly, 1 acre can net ₹80,000–1,50,000 per crop.

The real skill isn't growing onion — it's understanding the price cycle and knowing exactly when to sell versus when to hold your stock. This guide covers both. 🧅

Cultivation — Step by Step

  1. Soil preparation

Deep plough, 10–15T FYM/acre, raised beds 120cm wide, basal SSP + MOP. Good drainage is essential — poor drainage causes bulb rot.

  2. Nursery raising

25–30 days. Sow at 5g/sq.m, keep moist, transplant once seedlings are 15–20cm with a pencil-thick stem.

  3. Transplanting

15×10cm spacing for big onion, 10×10cm for small onion, plant 2–3cm deep. Mulch with dry leaves between rows.

  4. Watering

Daily for the first week, then every 3–4 days. Stop 10–15 days before harvest for proper bulb curing and shelf life.

  5. Fertiliser

Basal SSP/MOP/FYM, staged urea through day 40, potash and potassium nitrate at bulbing. Stop nitrogen after day 60.

  6. Harvest & curing

Harvest at 50–60% top fall, cure in shade 3–4 days with tops on, then trim and store ventilated. Proper curing is the secret to 4–6 months' shelf life.

💡 Smart strategy: harvest November–December, store 2–3 months, sell February–April at peak. That one timing decision alone can roughly double your onion income compared with selling right at harvest.

At a blended average of ₹20/kg, gross revenue runs ₹3,00,000–4,00,000 per acre, leaving a net profit of ₹80,000–1,50,000. Time your sale for the March–April peak and that can push past ₹2,00,000. 🧅

📅

Time Your Harvest Smart

Plant Sep–Oct, harvest Jan, store 2–3 months, sell Mar–Apr at ₹40–60/kg instead of ₹15/kg at harvest.

🏭

Build Simple Storage

A ventilated bamboo platform shed (₹15,000–20,000) cuts storage losses from 25–30% down to 5–8%.

🧅

Grow Small Onion Too

Aggregatum fetches ₹40–100/kg against ₹15–40 for big onion, with less competition and strong Tamil demand.

🌿

Use Sulphur Fertiliser

25kg/acre noticeably improves pungency, flavour, and storability — often deficient in local soils.

🏥

Prevent Purple Blotch

Spray Mancozeb 0.2% preventively every 10 days from day 30 — this fungal disease is the biggest crop threat here.

💰

Join an FPO

Farmer Producer Organizations give collective bargaining power — members often sell 15–25% better than solo farmers.

Onion is one of those crops that punishes impatience and rewards planning. Every season I remind myself: the harvest is only half the job — the storage and the timing decide the real income. If you're new to this crop, start with a small plot and get the storage right first. 🧅
