Groundnut Farming Tamil Nadu | 105 நாட்களில் லாபம் | The Crop That Fruits Underground — Real Numbers From My Farm
வேர்க்கடலை The Soil-Saving Cash Crop
நான் Kavin — Thalavadi, Erode. Five seasons of turmeric, tomato, onion and brinjal back to back left my soil test report with a number I didn't like — falling organic carbon, falling nitrogen. My agriculture officer didn't recommend a fertilizer. He recommended a legume.
I sowed groundnut on half an acre that season expecting nothing more than a soil fix. In 105 days — a third of turmeric's duration — that half acre returned enough to cover its own cost twice over, and left visibly richer soil behind for the brinjal crop that followed it. I expanded to a full acre the next season. This is everything I've learned since.

Six things that decide whether this crop works for you. Hover each card.
After flowering, the peg (pedicel) bends down and pushes into the soil — the pod forms and matures completely underground. No other major crop on this farm does this.
Red sandy loam, pH 6.0–7.5, free-draining. Loose soil lets pegs penetrate easily — heavy clay traps them above ground and pods never form.
25–30°C ideal. Tolerates light rain-fed conditions; best with 500–750mm distributed across the season, irrigated or rain.
100–110 days depending on variety — roughly a third of turmeric's cycle. Frees up land and capital fast.
Root nodules with Rhizobium bacteria pull nitrogen from the air into the soil — roughly 20–25kg/acre left behind for the next crop, free.
Drought-tolerant overall, but four windows are non-negotiable: sowing, flowering, pegging, and pod-fill. Miss those and yield drops sharply.
ALR 3, VRI 2, TMV 7, CO 7 Which One Fits You
I trialled three varieties side by side in my first full-acre season. Here's what the field actually told me.
| Variety | Duration | Yield / acre | Field notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALR 3 | 100–105 days | 1,100–1,300 kg | Bred for western TN's dry red soils — my best performer, bold kernels, good shelling %. |
| VRI 2 | 105–110 days | 1,000–1,200 kg | Old reliable, widely available seed, slightly lower oil content. |
| TMV 7 | 100–105 days | 900–1,100 kg | Shortest duration — useful if you need the land back quickly. |
| CO 7 | 105–110 days | 1,200–1,400 kg | Newer TNAU release, strong yield with careful irrigation timing. |
நிலம் தயாரிப்பு Four Things I Never Skip Now
Land Prep — நிலம்
Loose soil is non-negotiableDeep plough once, harrow twice, incorporate 2 tonnes FYM/acre. Compacted soil means fewer pegs reach the ground successfully.
Seed Treatment — விதை சிகிச்சை
Cut my seedling losses sharplyRhizobium culture + Trichoderma viride before sowing. Protects against collar rot and damping off while boosting nitrogen fixation.
Spacing — இடைவெளி
30cm × 10cmSeed rate ~80kg kernels/acre for spreading types. Sow 4–5cm deep into moist soil.
Gypsum — ஜிப்சம்
The yield lever most farmers skip200kg/acre broadcast around the base at flowering (Day 35–45). Groundnut can't move calcium up from roots to pods — it must be absorbed right where the pod forms.

🌱 Sowing
Moist seedbed, treated seed, 4–5cm deep.
🌿 First weeding
Clear competition early — roots are still shallow.
🌸 Flowering
Water stress here cuts flower number directly.
⚪ Pegging + gypsum
Most sensitive stage. Apply gypsum now, not later.
🥜 Pod fill
Determines kernel weight — keep soil moist, not wet.
✅ Harvest signal
Leaves yellow, inner shell veins darken — uproot now.
பூச்சி & நோய் What Actually Attacks This Crop
Leaf miner & aphids
Most common, easiest to manageYellow sticky traps + 5% neem seed kernel extract spray at first sign — kept both my seasons chemical-free.
🌿 Natural control worksWhite grub
Serious in light soilsLight traps for adult beetles before egg-laying, plus deep summer ploughing to expose grubs to birds.
⚠️ Watch closelyTikka leaf spot

மண் ஆரோக்கியம் What the Market Price Misses
Groundnut's root nodules fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil — roughly 20–25kg/acre left behind for whatever follows. My brinjal crop after groundnut needed visibly less basal nitrogen than it ever had after turmeric. That showed up directly in my fertilizer bill the next season, not just in a soil report.
