கரும்பு The Crop I Avoided for Three Years
நான் Kavin — Thalavadi, Erode. Every season I'd watch the sugarcane fields near the cooperative mill and think the same thing: twelve months is too long to wait, too much capital tied up, too much risk in one planting. Turmeric, tomato, onion — they all came back faster.
What changed my mind was one number a neighbouring farmer showed me at his ratoon harvest — his second crop off the same root system, no replanting, no fresh sett cost, almost half the labour of the first cycle. Sugarcane isn't one twelve-month crop. Done right, it's three harvests off one planting, spread across nearly three years. This is what that actually looks like:
Plant crop — 12 months
Fresh setts, full land prep, full fertilizer cost. Highest investment, sets up everything after it.
1st ratoon — ~11–12 months
Same roots regrow. No sett cost, lighter land work — cost drops noticeably, yield stays close to the plant crop.
2nd ratoon — ~11–12 months
Final cycle before replanting is usually worth it. After this, soil and root vigour call for a fresh start.

After the first harvest, new shoots regrow from the same root stubble — a ratoon crop. You can usually take 2 ratoon harvests before yield drops enough to justify replanting fresh setts.
Deep, well-drained loam to clay loam, pH 6.5–7.5. Sugarcane is a heavy feeder with deep roots — shallow or waterlogged soil stunts cane thickness badly.
Needs a long frost-free window, 21–27°C for active growth, and at least 1,000–1,500mm water across the season — irrigation is essential outside high-rainfall belts.
10–12 months for the plant crop, 11–12 months for each ratoon. This is the longest single-cycle cash crop on most Tamil Nadu farms.
Cane cuttings (setts) dipped in fungicide + hot water before planting — the single biggest defence against red rot, the disease that wiped out whole fields in nearby plots that skipped it.
Soil mounded against the base around month 4–5 to support the tall stalks and stop them toppling (lodging) once they get heavy near maturity.

Deep, open furrowsDeep plough 2–3 times, form furrows 75–90cm apart. Incorporate 8–10 tonnes FYM/acre before planting — sugarcane feeds heavily for the entire 12 months.

Non-negotiable against red rot3-bud setts dipped in fungicide solution (carbendazim-based) plus a hot water treatment at 50°C for 2 hours where possible. Skipping this is the most common cause of red rot losses nearby.
