🌱 Why I Finally Planted Sugarcane

கரும்பு The Crop I Avoided for Three Years

நான் Kavin — Thalavadi, Erode. Every season I'd watch the sugarcane fields near the cooperative mill and think the same thing: twelve months is too long to wait, too much capital tied up, too much risk in one planting. Turmeric, tomato, onion — they all came back faster.

What changed my mind was one number a neighbouring farmer showed me at his ratoon harvest — his second crop off the same root system, no replanting, no fresh sett cost, almost half the labour of the first cycle. Sugarcane isn't one twelve-month crop. Done right, it's three harvests off one planting, spread across nearly three years. This is what that actually looks like:

HARVESTS

Plant crop — 12 months

Fresh setts, full land prep, full fertilizer cost. Highest investment, sets up everything after it.

1st ratoon — ~11–12 months

Same roots regrow. No sett cost, lighter land work — cost drops noticeably, yield stays close to the plant crop.

2nd ratoon — ~11–12 months

Final cycle before replanting is usually worth it. After this, soil and root vigour call for a fresh start.

🔬 Sugarcane Basics

Six fundamentals that decide whether this long-duration crop works on your land. Hover each card.

🎋
Ratooning
hover to learn →

After the first harvest, new shoots regrow from the same root stubble — a ratoon crop. You can usually take 2 ratoon harvests before yield drops enough to justify replanting fresh setts.

🟤
Soil
hover to learn →

Deep, well-drained loam to clay loam, pH 6.5–7.5. Sugarcane is a heavy feeder with deep roots — shallow or waterlogged soil stunts cane thickness badly.

🌡️
Climate
hover to learn →

Needs a long frost-free window, 21–27°C for active growth, and at least 1,000–1,500mm water across the season — irrigation is essential outside high-rainfall belts.

⏱️
Duration
hover to learn →

10–12 months for the plant crop, 11–12 months for each ratoon. This is the longest single-cycle cash crop on most Tamil Nadu farms.

🦠
Sett Treatment
hover to learn →

Cane cuttings (setts) dipped in fungicide + hot water before planting — the single biggest defence against red rot, the disease that wiped out whole fields in nearby plots that skipped it.

⛰️
Earthing Up
hover to learn →

Soil mounded against the base around month 4–5 to support the tall stalks and stop them toppling (lodging) once they get heavy near maturity.

🎋 Variety Selection

CO 0238, CO 86032, CO 94012 Which One Fits You

Mill agents pushed me toward whatever they had stock of first. I asked the agriculture extension office for what actually suits red soil and irrigation-limited plots — here's what they recommended and why.

VarietyDurationYield potentialField notes
CO 023810–12 months40–45 t/acHigh sugar recovery, widely grown across TN mills — what I planted, good ratoon response.
CO 8603211–12 months38–42 t/acOld reliable across South India, tolerant of moderate water stress.
CO 9401210–11 months36–40 t/acShorter duration option, useful where land turnover matters more than peak tonnage.
CO 9900411–12 months40–44 t/acStrong against red rot — worth considering if red rot has hit nearby fields before.
🌾 Planting Essentials

நடவு தயாரிப்பு Four Things I Never Skip Now

🚜

Land Prep — நிலம்

Deep, open furrows

Deep plough 2–3 times, form furrows 75–90cm apart. Incorporate 8–10 tonnes FYM/acre before planting — sugarcane feeds heavily for the entire 12 months.

🦠

Sett Treatment — விதை சிகிச்சை

Non-negotiable against red rot

3-bud setts dipped in fungicide solution (carbendazim-based) plus a hot water treatment at 50°C for 2 hours where possible. Skipping this is the most common cause of red rot losses nearby.

✅ Never skip this
📏

Planting Density

3-bud setts, end to end

Lay setts end-to-end in furrows, slight overlap, cover with 4–5cm soil. Around 12,000–15,000 three-bud setts per acre depending on spacing.

⛰️

Earthing Up — மண் அணைத்தல்

Month 4–5

Mound soil against the base once the crop is well-established. This single step prevents lodging later when stalks are tall and heavy with wind exposure.

🎋 Sett planting

Treated setts laid in moist furrows.

M2

🌱 Tillering

Multiple shoots emerge per sett — first weeding round.

M5

⛰️ Earthing up

Mound soil to support tall stalks ahead.

M7

📈 Grand growth

Heaviest water and nutrient demand of the whole cycle.

M10

🍬 Maturation

Sugar accumulates in stalk — irrigation tapers off.

M12

✅ Harvest

Cut at ground level — ratoon shoots regrow from the same stubble.

🐛 Pest & Disease Watch

பூச்சி & நோய் What Actually Attacks This Crop

🔴

Red rot

The big one

Reddening inside the stalk with a sour smell — devastating if it spreads. Prevention starts at sett treatment, not after symptoms appear.

⚠️ Prevent, don't treat
🐛

Early shoot borer

Attacks young tillers

Dead-heart symptom in young shoots. Pheromone traps and timely removal of affected shoots keep it manageable without heavy spraying.

🪲

White grub

Soil pest, root damage

Light traps for adult beetles during pre-monsoon flight, plus deep summer ploughing to expose grubs.

🍃

Pyrilla (leafhopper)

Sap-sucking pest

Causes yellowing and sooty mould on leaves. Natural predators like epiricania moth controls it well if broad-spectrum sprays aren't used carelessly.

🌍 What Twelve Months Teaches You

பொறுமையின் பாடம் What the Cash Flow Doesn't Show

Sugarcane has taught me to think in years, not seasons. The ratoon crop is where the real long-term economics show up — by the second harvest off the same roots, my cost per tonne dropped sharply since there's no fresh sett cost, no full land prep, just earthing up, feeding, and water. That's the part nobody mentions when they talk about sugarcane's twelve-month wait — the wait only happens once.
