After eighteen months of running a small dairy unit alongside my crop farm, this is everything I know about setting it up right.

Dry floor = healthy udderCemented floor with a slope for urine drainage, roof with good ventilation, and a separate calf pen. Mastitis (udder infection) almost always traces back to dirty, wet standing conditions.
Feed management
Green fodder + concentrateNapier grass or co-3 fodder cut fresh daily, supplemented with concentrate feed. Feed is 60–70% of your total running cost — growing your own fodder on a small plot cuts this noticeably.

Daily milk sales — the main stream
AAVIN procurement at ₹38/L for cow milk plus the ₹3 CM incentive = ₹41 effective rate per litre, paid monthly.
Calf sales — the once-a-year bonus
Each cow delivers a calf once a year. Female heifers sell well as future dairy animals, male calves for meat or draught.
Cow dung — savings, not cash
3 cows produce enough manure daily to feed my vermicompost unit, cutting fertilizer cost across all my crop plots.
Ghee / curd — value-added upside
Processing even 1–2L daily into home-made curd or ghee and selling direct brings more per litre than AAVIN procurement alone.

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)
Most contagiousSix-monthly vaccination is mandatory — an FMD outbreak dries up milk production completely for weeks and can spread to the entire village's cattle.

The cow purchase cost (roughly ₹60,000–80,000 per good Jersey cross) is one-time. Monthly net income of ₹10,000–12,000 from three cows means the initial investment pays back within 18–24 months, after which it's recurring income with only running costs.

Capital subsidy on unit costSubsidy available under DEDS (Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme) through NABARD-linked banks — covers shed construction, milking equipment, and animal purchase for eligible units.
