நான் Kavin — Thalavadi, Erode. Sugarcane is unique among the crops I grow because the government fixes a minimum purchase price by law — the FRP. That means a buyer is guaranteed the day the crop is ready, unlike many other crops where price depends entirely on the market that week.

Erode, Salem, Namakkal and the Cauvery-Bhavani basin are the real heartland of Tamil Nadu sugarcane. Between the mill FRP, the jaggery premium, and a cheap second "ratoon" harvest from the same roots, this is one of the few crops where two years of planning genuinely pays for itself twice.

1. Best Planting Time

   📅 Jan–Mar main crop, Jun–Jul second crop

   January planting gives the longest growing season and best FRP timing at harvest. Avoid August–September — monsoon waterlogging kills young setts.

2. Land Preparation

   🌍 Deep plough 30cm + 10T FYM/acre

   Furrows 90–100cm apart. Basal dose 50kg SSP + 25kg MOP per acre in the furrow bottom before planting.

3. Sett Planting

   🌿 3-budded setts, treated before planting

   Treat setts with Carbendazim 1g/L + Chlorpyrifos 2ml/L for 30 minutes. Plant at 45°, 30cm apart, cover 5cm soil, water immediately.

4. Irrigation

   💧 Drip saves 50% water, +25–30% yield

   Germination: every 3 days. Tillering: every 5 days. Grand growth: every 7 days. Reduce sharply in the final 45 days to boost sugar content.

5. Fertiliser Schedule

   🌿 Urea 150kg + SSP 150kg + MOP 100kg/acre, split 4x

   Basal, then Day 45, Day 90, Day 150 splits. Add Zinc Sulphate 10kg at Day 30. Never apply nitrogen after Day 200.

6. Earthing Up

   🔗 Two operations, Day 45–60 and Day 90–100

   Prevents lodging — the biggest physical crop-loss cause in TN sugarcane. Inter-cultivate after the second earthing.

7. Ratoon Crop

   ♻️ 40% of the cost, 80% of the yield

   Cut at ground level after main harvest, fertilise within 2 weeks (50kg Urea + 25kg MOP), water immediately. No sett cost, no planting labour.

8. Harvest & Selling

   🎯 Brix 18–20 = ready

   Register with the mill 30–45 days early. Jaggery units near Erode pay 15–20% above FRP. Deliver within 24 hours of cutting.

Add cattle-fodder tops (₹5,000–8,000/acre) and a jaggery-belt sale premium, and total 2-year income per acre can cross ₹1,50,000+ with smart selling. 🌾

Sugarcane rewards patience. It is not a crop for quick money, but for a farmer who plans two years ahead, plants a good ratoon, and registers early with the mill — it is one of the steadiest incomes we have in Erode.
